Dwell

Week 06 – Sharing the Hope

Transition:

This year our Christmas series is called Dwell. The premise is that God came to dwell with us so that we (His children) could dwell with Him. Each message will be predicated on the word dwell (although the meaning will be used in various ways). Last week, the message was focused on the birth of Jesus, Israel’s long awaited, and highly anticipated Messiah. One special point was highlighted...when the angel announced to the shepherds that he was sharing “good news...for all the people,” all the people meant everyone, including the lowest of the low...shepherds. To affirm this reality, humanity’s only Savior was born in a lowly manner Himself.

Context:

This week, we finish up the series by looking at the reaction of two godly Israelites who had been dwelling at the Temple as they waited faithfully for the birth of Israel’s Messiah. They continue to serve as great examples for us today as we wait for the coming of the Messiah (Jesus) as well.

Opening Questions:

• When you think of Jesus’ return (the second coming) what comes to mind for you? Is there anything that you’re waiting for especially? If so, what? ...and why?

• When have you waited on the Lord for a long period of time? What were you waiting for? How did it turn out? What was especially hard for you during the waiting period?

Scripture/Storying: Luke 2:22-38

Discipleship Questions:

• What sticks out to you from the Scripture passage?

• What is “the consolation of Israel” for which Simeon was waiting, and why do you think it became known by this name? Is this an appropriate description for your waiting for the Lord’s return also? Why or why not?

• In what ways is the Holy Spirit at work in Simeon’s life? When have you noticed the Holy Spirit’s work in your own life? How did it affect you?

• Joseph and Mary marveled at what Simeon said about Jesus (vv29-32). What is your reaction to what he said?

• What do you think Simeon meant by what he said to Mary personally? How do you think it affected her? How does it affect you today?

• What impresses you about Anna’s story? After you met the Lord, did you tell others about Him? If so, share the story. If telling others about Jesus has been difficult for you, discuss with your group some ways you might begin to do it.

• What has the Holy Spirit revealed to you through this passage and its discussion? What are some action steps you will take in following His lead?

Prayer time:

This week we are closing out/starting out the year by thanking God in our prayers for His faithfulness, goodness, longsuffering, mercy, and grace toward us. Pray that we will continue to be faithful in brining His light to all whom He sets in our path...both as a church and individually.
